NOTE: This technique only supported for Windows-machine
Why speed up is needed?
Think that you bought a laptop (notebook computer) for $1,000, what you need from it is fast processing speed with a large amount of disk capacities right? So, do you satisfied with that speed or just follow my instructions to boost its current speed 10 to 20 percent more. Sounds interesting, right? OK, follow me.
The first part I will describe how to boost your laptop speed by Disabling Services
What are services?
Services are operating system instructions or processes that execute for some task such as Automatic Update -> tasks on controlling Windows Update.
To disable some unused services help regaining some system memory and faster your Windows start-up.
How to Disable Services?
First, you need to access the Control Panel.
Control Panel can be accessed through
Start > Control Panel
Start > Settings > Control Panel (in classic start menu)
In classic view, look for the Administrative Tools
In category view, enter Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools
In both views, enter Services
You'll see the windows like this
Now it's time to clear off those unused services. Keep in mind that disabling services could be effected some software that depends on services we're going to disable (just some software only). So better try disabling it one-by-one and see the following effects, if none, go on another service. Want to know what each service does?, just click on the services names and the description will show on the left or browse to Process Library.
Here is the list of services we're going to disable
Automatic Update (should be disabled if you aren't boring of Windows Update)
ClipBook
COM+ Event System
COM+ System Application
Error Reporting Service
Help and Support (should be disabled if you aren't using Windows F1 help)
Indexing Service (file indexing service, you don't really need it)
Infrared Monitor (exists only in some infrared built-in typed laptops)
Messenger (old-styled Windows messenger, should be disable unless you still using it!)
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (you don't share your desktop to anyone right?)
Print Spooler (required for all Printers, if you don't have, disable it)
Remote Registry
Routing and Remote Access
System Restore Service (used for recovering system while it fault - you MUST be sure that your machine are not full of bugs to disable it)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper (not the TCP/IP itself, just a helper)
Telnet (not recommend for network terminal machine)
The red name is the Windows Services which are applications-effected after disabling it, for example, if you disable Automatic Update, you may not get any update from Microsoft (but you'll get back amount of RAM in return).
Blues are safely to disable.
Steps to Disable Services
1. In the services windows, right click on the service that you need to disable then select properties
2. if service status is started, click Stop, otherwise do nothing
3. change the status type to Disable
Now a Service has been disabled, keep doing this from 1 to 3 until you finished all list above. From this technique you will gain some memory (RAM) back from the system and reduce a bit start-up time for Windows.
