Original Post by NewsLaptopComputer

After we finished previous two steps:

Speed up your laptop - Part 2

Next one is: Manage Start Menu and Taskbar

After applied this technique to your laptop, you should feel the difference of startup loading time (yes, faster for sure).

Well..., first, we're going to start from managing start menu.
Managing start menu does not effect the startup loading time, but help reducing a bit delay from popping it up.

> right click on the start button itself, select properties

> on the first page, select classic start menu

Choose Classic Start Menu

now, your start menu should become a Windows 98 styled start menu. The advantage is it does not implement many graphical components as the Windows XP styled does, so there will be no delay from calling it.

For the managing taskbar part, I recommended you to read carefully before performing changes

Clear Quick Launches

Quick launches are those small-icon next to the start button. Your laptop will load these buttons in the start-up time. decreasing quick launches = reducing startup time!

There are two ways to manage quick launch icons

1. uncheck the Show Quick Launch the properties of start button > taskbar tab. This will disable the use of quick launch icons - in case you never use it

2. delete unused quick launches, just right click on the one that you need to remove and select delete

Disable Applications on System Tray

System tray are the place where small active application icons lived, certain stated on the right most of the taskbar (if you didn't move taskbar, it'll be on the bottom-right of the screen). System tray's applications absolutely consume your startup time. Some people have more than ten application running on the system tray which is the bad idea to have them. To disable applications on system tray, please carefully consider which one is required to keep (ex. Anti-virus), or useless. Some application provides the option to disable its application on the system tray, such as ACDsee, Snagit, MSN, etc. Applications that does not provide the system try disability option, you should follow these steps

1. click start button
2. access RUN...

RUN

3. type in the box: "msconfig" (exclude double quotation)

MSconfig

4. select Startup tab

Startup Tab

5. look for the application name that you cannot disable from its program, uncheck the box in front of the name

Disable Startup

6. keep doing step5 until you cleared all unwanted startup applications

7. machine restart is required after finished

you can hide the existing icons that you must live it, such as Anti-virus icon, Automatic update, volume adjustment icon, etc, by:

1. right click on start button, select properties
2. choose Taskbar tab

Taskbar Tab

3. hit Customize... button

Customize Button

4. select the application you want to hide, then change it behavior to Always Hide

Application to Hide

Change Behavior

5. hit OK to finish

Congratulation! Now, your Start menu and your Taskbar have been optimized!
